This will vary when using other materials & choice of paint/varnish process being applied.

Made from modern high tech foam which has considerable advantages over balsa.
It is lighter and stronger and has no fibres to fray or swell when painted.
It has a closed cell structure so will not take on water even if not painted, can still be painted with the same paints as balsa including cellulose
